Steam Badges Explained: Types, XP and Craft Limits

Steam badges are profile items that can add XP to your account. Game badges come from complete trading-card sets, while account and event badges follow separate rules.

What are Steam badges?

A Steam badge records an achievement or a completed card set on your profile. Crafting a standard game badge adds 100 XP, and accumulating badge XP raises the account level according to Steam’s increasing ten-level curve.

How do game badges work?

An eligible game has a card set. Once every unique card in the set is present, Steam enables Craft Badge. The craft consumes the cards, adds 100 XP, and normally creates a profile background, emoticon and another reward item according to Steam’s current rules.

The normal badge has five levels. A second complete set moves it to level two, and the fifth set completes it. The crafting guide covers the steps and disabled-button problems.

What is different about foil badges?

Foil cards are rarer variants with their own complete set and badge artwork. A foil badge crafts once and still adds 100 XP. Because leveling values every standard craft equally, a valuable foil set is rarely efficient solely for XP.

Why do event badges matter for leveling?

Steam sale and event badges can accept repeated sets without the five-level game cap. That makes one event badge capable of absorbing a large number of crafts. Supply, earning methods and event timing vary, so read the sale badge guide before relying on one.

Which badges should you craft first?

Claim account badges that require only actions already completed, then inspect complete game sets in inventory. Among tradable sets, prioritize low replacement cost. A $5 set and a $0.30 set each grant 100 XP, so the expensive one is usually better sold unless its artwork or collection value matters to you.

For a planned target, count normal badge capacity. A game with no existing badge can provide five crafts; a level-three badge has room for two; a level-five badge has none. Foil capacity does not restore normal capacity because the foil badge is a separate one-time craft.

What rewards come from a game badge craft?

Steam’s Trading Cards FAQ lists the game badge, 100 XP, a random game emoticon, a random profile background and a chance at a discount coupon for another game or DLC. The cards are consumed. The reward item’s resale value is not guaranteed and should not be subtracted from cost before it exists.

Badge artwork changes with each normal craft up to level five. You can feature a completed badge on the profile or mini-profile. Collectors may choose an expensive badge for its final artwork even when it is inefficient for account XP.

How are profile-level badges different?

The emblem beside the account level summarizes total XP from all badges. It is not crafted from its own card set. Its number changes with the level, its color changes at ten-level ranges, and its shape family changes every hundred levels.

This distinction avoids a common confusion: a “level 100 badge” may mean the account’s profile emblem, while a “level-five game badge” means the final normal craft for one game. The visual level-badge guide covers the first; the crafting walkthrough covers the second.

How many badges does a target require?

Translate the target into XP, then divide purchased XP by 100. Level 25 from zero needs 4,500 XP and 45 standard crafts. Level 50 needs 15,000 XP and 150 crafts. Level 100 needs 55,000 XP and 550 crafts across at least 110 ordinary games.

Free account and event XP reduce the purchased requirement. Partial XP inside the current level reduces it too, which is why the calculator’s public-profile lookup can be more precise than entering a level number alone.

How do badges turn into account levels?

The first ten levels require 100 XP each. The next ten require 200 XP each, and the cost rises again every ten levels. One badge craft always contributes 100 XP, so it moves a new account much farther than a high-level account.
